Recent Progress in Production Methods for Cellulose Nanocrystals: Leading to More Sustainable Processes

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are a new class of biodegradable nanomaterial derived from the most abundant and renewable biomass on planet: cellulose. Due to their potential as low carbon footprint nanomaterial, CNCs have received significant interest in community for wide variety applications. In this review, recent strategies exploited produce therefore summarized, focusing “greener” isolation methods aiming at minimizing environmental impact production. The each production method is qualitatively evaluated properties obtained discussed. Finally, necessary steps address development field industrial context discussed, type applications where can be exploited.
